  • I know that Americans call what we call the pavement (the paved bits of the road, where pedestrains walk, at the side of the tarmac) the "side walk." It is at the side and people walk on it, so it is a prosaic but rational alternative.

    But I did not know that they called the tarmac "pavement."

    At least in this video, there is the phrase, "gladiators of the pavement."

    These gladiators are not riding on the sidewalk, or even on anything that is paved.
