While exploring in the mountains with friends the kids began an impromptu game which Emily calls 'gur-ri-ko'. The game involves the old style hand contest of rock-scissors-paper with the winner advancing up the stairs a certain number of steps based on which hand position the winner had chosen. The hand-position of stone (fist) yields the word gu-ri-ko (the name of a Japanese candy company) which gives three steps. The position of paper (open hand) gives pa-i-na-tsu-pu-ru (pineapple) and six steps. Finally, the hand position of scissors (peace sign) allows the winner to use the phrase chi-yo-ko-re-i-to (chocolate) which is also six steps.

The following information was provided by YouTube user TiramisuHappy:

Each hand sign in the game of じゃんけん (janken) is pronounced in Japanese as follows:

Rock = "Guu"
Scissors = "Choki"
Paper = "Paa"

"Guu" is for Guriko (The name of a Japanese candy maker. It actually spells Glico. Why they picked this word as opposed to, say, Grape Juice, is beyond me.) "Choki" is for chocolate and similarly, "Paa" is for pineapple, each sounding like the first syllable of their corresponding word.

  • That is possibly one of the cutest things I've ever seen.

    You dont see kids playing like that here anymore. Makes me sad. If it doesnt need batteries then kids arent interested here.
