Seeds and planting materials are the foundation of a country's agriculture. But the process of producing better seeds or improved planting materials takes time and many processes before the new variety reaches farmers. Dr. Silver Tumweganyire, a potato breeder at the Uganda National Crop Resource Research Institute explains that potato planting material may take up to 10 years to be developed from an needs assessment, identifying the characteristics of the plant to improve, through breeding to producing a variety the farmer can plant.
This production is part of the story on "seeds of uncertainty" produced by Gerald Businge for the Africareportingproject.org of UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.
