Here is a video demonstrating how to make a simple planet in photoshop. This technique is not high-res or amazing, but it can be used for creating quick planets that are usable as background add-ins for larger space scenes.
I used Photoshop CS4 for this, and the original creation time was about 30 minutes.
Also, I had some trouble with the lens flare at the end, so bear with me :)
