American Herro - The Documentary Trailer

American Herro is the remarkable story of a young Kurdish girl who comes to America as a refugee from Iraq and lives out the American dream. 30-years later, traveling the globe working for Condoleezza Rice, U.S. Diplomat Herro Mustafa invites her first American friend, filmmaker Kirk Roos, to visit Iraq and retrace her steps to freedom.

Herro Mustafa is the newly appointed senior advisor the Middle East for US Vice President Joe Biden.

She has worked at the Foreign Service Office with the U.S. Department of State.

Previously, she was the Special Assistant to Nicholas Burns, the Under Secretary for Political Affairs at the State Department. In this capacity, she was the principal advisor to the Under Secretary on Middle East issues. Previously, Ms. Mustafa worked as the Director for Israeli-Palestinian Affairs and Iran at the National Security Council and before that as Director for Iraq and Afghanistan.

A fluent Kurdish, Greek and Arabic speaker, Ms. Mustafa has served in Beirut, Lebanon, where she reopened the non-immigrant visa section after a 14 year hiatus; in Mosul, Iraq, where she was the senior civilian responsible for administering the province of 4 million; and in Athens, Greece, where she served as a Political Officer.

Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Ms. Mustafa worked as a Senior Editor at the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research in Abu Dhabi, UAE and as an Election Supervisor with OSCE in Bosnia. She graduated from Georgetown University and Princeton University.
