I am from the center of continental Normandy and I do not consider myself French even if I have a French passport. Normandy is like the the Bask country or Flanders a cross bordering country. The Normans of Insular Normandy (Jersey & Guernsey) mostly speak English due to British immigration and history but many still speak Norman, but their identity is Norman. NB these Islands are not a part of the UK or even the EU.
People in continental Normandy are starting to wake up and it'a a good thing.

@youlou87 I admire you for learning Breton. When people like you make the effort to learn the language, the prospects of Breton surviving into the next generations increase. I have discovered that there is quite a lot of native Breton on youtube (on the fagopy channel, for instance), and it is interesting to hear the difference between them (who sound Celtic) and the Neo-Breton speakers (who sound French).

@Bard68S The great difference between Wales and Brittany is that Wales is an autonomous country whereas Brittany is just considered as a french region. Breton is the only celtic language which has no official status. I'm learning Breton by myself cause I didn't learn it at school. As a result, I have a french accent too. What's weird?

@youlou87 i will.but the people i've asked about this language are not very encouraging.when i asked my french teacher if it would be easy for me to learn since i already speak french, she told me that there is not absolute affiliation between the two languages and that kind of disappointed me.i was planning on visiting bretagne in the summer time and brezhoneg is one of the few languages that actually make me want to learn it. do you know any good introductory online lessons or perhapsa lexicon?

@supernalsylph It's true that Breton and French are different languages, because of their origins (Breton is a Celtic language and French a Latin language). But don't let it discourage you ! :) If you're looking for a lexicon, look for "geriadur geobreizh". For online courses, you can try "kervarker . org". I hope it will help you get started... Then enjoy your trip in brittany next summer !! ;)

Demat dit,youlou87. Nice to learn the Celtic language of Brittany. But I feel the Bretons like the French are quite ignorant about the fact that the Oil languages such as Gallo and Norman are not dialects of French but languages in their own rights.
For example my Norman language is considered a patois but it has an older literature than French has. It was also the language of the kings of England for 300 years. Norman literature flourished at that period (Anglo-Norman literature).

@Anquetil79 Demat Anquetil ! Sorry for my late answer... But yeah, you're right about Norman language, I agree with you ! I have a friend who speak Gallo, I know it's not a dialect of French. It's true that few people think about it, which is sad. But, yeah, I totally agree with you and support your point of view ! Happy to hear you speak Norman, it's always nice to know regional languages are still being spoken :).
