BR 4-6-2 No. 70013 'Oliver Cromwell' on the West Somerset Explorer, Paddington to Minehead and return.
Wolfhall Road, nr. Burbage, Wiltshire at 10.47

A clutch of Kennet & Avon canal scenes which includes what remains of the bridge structure which carried the M.S.W.J.R. between Marlborough and Andover.

GWR No. 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' on The Collett Express, Solihull, Bristol and return via. Swindon.
Captured near lock gate 56 along the Kennet & Avon canal tow path - which is reasonably safe to suggest that this was the summit of the climb from Newbury - at 12.10.

As you can see from the ever changing colour of the sky there was a period, between the passing of the steam hauled tours, when I pretty much got soaked through to the skin - but it was worth it.

  • Stunning scenery Nigel, and great shots of both locos..thoroughly enjoyed it....Bob

  • @robmasterman Thanks Bob. The scenery ain't too bad is it :-) The canal tow path was fairly peaceful but felt a little more than exposed when the clouds opened :(

  • Nice footage. Particularly liked your film of Ollie. You got a great sound.

  • @bkendlerA4 Thanks Barry. Ollie's sound - yes, it seemed to carry for quite a long time after I'd switched off the camera.

  • say no more well done

  • @locomotive67 Thank you :-)

  • @GreatWestern175 Ryan, many thanks. it was a bit of a rarity capturing two very different locomotives along this stretch. On performance I'd put the Swindon built loco just ahead of the Crewe loco - but perhaps that's just me being biased.

Yes that was me trying to take cover at the Castle filming location when you passed me under your massive umbrella. Now I'll try to remember your face to your name :-)

    Thanks once again.

  • Nice to see you managing to get both engines running on that route. 70013 sounding really good going up Savernake and 5043 really thrashing it. Two different combinations of motive power over Savernake! I think I walked passed you when it was heavy downpours before getting the Castle, your tripos was on the embankment with no cam on top I was holding my umbrella and tripod

  • @BritishTrainVideos Thank you.
