is a sandbox-style action-adventure western video game developed by Rockstar San Diego, due for release on May 18, 2010 in North America and on May 21, 2010 in Europe and Australia for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.[2] It is a "spiritual successor"[3] to 2004's Red Dead Revolver.
Similar to the Grand Theft Auto series, Red Dead Redemption gives the player a large, open world environment allowing the player to move freely. Players on foot can walk, run, interact with the environment, and combat enemies with firearms. Different breeds of horses are the main forms of transportation but players can ride in carriages and trains.
The open world environment allows players to choose how they want to play. Storyline missions are required for progress. Along with the main storyline, players can take part in random events as they explore the environment. These include hangings, ambushes, pleas for help, and animal attacks. Players can also take part in optional side activities ranging from standoffs, gambling, and hunting fauna.
Red Dead Redemption makes use of a morality system where players have the ability to be gain positive or negative "Honor". Many of the ways to gain positive honor includes taking an outlaw alive and saving a kidnapped innocent. Negative honor can be attained for committing crimes including killing civilians. This works along with another system "Fame", showing how people react based on Marston's honor status.[4]

Combat and gunplay is a major part of the game. Gunfights in Red Dead Redemption are conducted using a third-person system. The player can take cover, target a specific person, blindfire, and free aim. Individual body parts can also be targeted. When the player shoots an enemy, the game engine uniquely creates the AI reactions. John Marston has an arsenal of weapons to choose from that include revolvers, lever or bolt-action rifles, knives, explosives, lassos, mounted gatling guns, and cannons.[5]
A combat feature that Marston can utilize is the Dead-Eye targeting system. Dead-Eye is used in a bullet-time-like manner so the player can slow down the world to place a precise shot or paint in body parts of enemies. Upon the effect of Dead Eye, Marston will shoot a fast succession of shots on targeted enemies.
