Jeff is basically quoting John (New Testament) in this song. Pharisees were the theologians of Jesus' time. John 7:34 (quoting Jesus) says "You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come." Later Jeff sings "and no one is going to take my life from me..." which refers to John 10:17-18 that quotes Jesus as saying, "The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life-only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord."
