Right before the athlete jumps, his knees shoot in. There are a few things going on here, but the primary issue is a glute weakness. Try it for yourself, rock back to the jump, but shoot your knees in like the athlete in the video. Next, rock back, BUT this time flex your glutes. Note the difference.
Secondary, the athlete needs to learn the correct movement pattern, so it is is somewhat nuerological.
Here's a few "Synergy" twists on common glute exercises:
Each movement is unique since the glute is forced to face resistance in multiple planes (pulling forward by the band and gravity pulling the leg down). Also, the heel is turned UP to the ceiling in order to hit the glutes more than the hip flexors.
I'll add, even if you don't have your knees shooting in, chances are your glutes could be stronger. Try out the simple video above and enjoy the results!
