On the morning of June 27, 1995, German police responded to a hostage taking at the Commerzbank in the Berlin suburb of Zehlendorf. Sixteen people were being held by four gunmen, who demanded $17 million in ransom and a helicopter to escape in. After a full day of high drama and tense negotiations, authorities realized theyd been had. The hostage taking was an elaborate ruse that allowed mastermind Khaled Al Bazari and his crew to steal millions from the bank vault before escaping through a 200 metre tunnel they dug from across the street over the course of 16 months.
