  • Instead of using cotter pins you should wire the studs together. All the cotter pin does is prevent the nut from comming off the stud, but the studs are threaded into the crankcase and if not wired together the entire stud can back out which of course is very dangerous.

  • @edisonphonographs My father said he has been driving the A from 1950 and has never seen the stud back off by using cotter pins.

  • @richpin06a A another thing is there is two bolts with a u head that holds them in place with a pin.

  • There is a rubber ball available that "slips" over the end of the radius rod. The ball is partially filled with RTV silicon. A special casting is supplied for this repair that replaces the lower cover. Then the bolts are tightened sufficiently enough so the radius rod pins that hold the socket bolts in place aren't bent, probably fairly tight just so the cotter pins can be inserted through the castle nuts. Some of the silicon will squeese out. This is a satisfactory repair to a worn radius ball.

  • @johntdso It is a good repair but you must stop the oil from leaking in that area first with a special seal.

  • cool, what the heck is a radius rod?

  • @DrJerryrigger It is like a control arm on a modern car.

  • Great job with this old car Rich. Nice to work on something simple and straightforward.

  • Thanks Rich! I never knew that about a Model A. Wow. The front axle used the stability of the bell housing for stability. Ingenious lubrication idea. Once upon a time these were every day jobs for the old timers! Tks again for the great vid. Always appreciated.
