To say I was shocked at how much fun a football game is at SMU would be an understatement. Prior to my first visit to SMU I expected it to be similar to what I've experience at other Conference USA schools - a big letdown compared to BCS school. (Yes, UCF, East Carolina and Southern Miss you are an exception and Marshall is worth it for the historical significance alone.).
Fortunately, SMU's pregame football atmosphere isn't a bust. And, despite a small stadium and not necessarily sell outs, their tailgating kicks butt. Think a smaller version of The Grove at Ole Miss. It's frightening close.
At SMU, which is located in a rich, clean part of Dallas, their "Grove" is dubbed "The Boulevard" and the tailgating here is first class, as you'll see. And, yes, those Texas hotties are crawling all over the place.
About an hour prior to game time the SMU Marching Band, SMU cheerleaders and dance team members start on the lawn in front of Dallas Hall and parade through The Boulevard on their way to Ford Stadium. It's actually a great experience. This was in 2010 prior to the Mustangs hosting cross town rival TCU.
Pony Up!
