This film is part of IDA's DocuWeeks '09.

For the first time in its history, a film crew has been allowed access to the field operations of the world largest medical NGO--Doctors Without Borders. Filmed in the war zones of Liberia and Congo, "Living in Emergency" follows four volunteer doctors as they struggle to provide emergency care in extreme conditions. Amidst the chaos, each volunteer must confront the severe challenges of the work, the tough choices and the limits of their own idealism. (www.livinginemergency.com)

  • i have no words for these people. they are doing an incredible job out of pure wish to help people in need. it's a proof of selflessness that i find amazing. when you already give up on so many things just to go to med school, work your a** off - you expect as a compensating factor to have a decent payed job in a decent hospital where you can run all the tests you need. but they go there because what matters in the end is saving people. that is what real medicine is!

I worked at a missionary hospital in Congo for a summer and their was a definite difference. The doctors were much happier - not that everything was perfect- and the whole attitude of their work was so much better. I would definitely check out missionary medical work before doing MSF. Their (missionary's) approach and goal in helping people is much different and frankly, more effective. I really felt bad for the MSF doctors in this film. : (

I just watched this documentary last night. I am a Christian who wants to do medical missions full time. (I was just accepted to medical school) After you watch this I think it will depress you. The people in this film are for the most part all non-believers and are very dysfunctional and I felt very sad for them. They seem to be jaded, with no hope and are working with MSF to escape their demons. (not literal demons)...continued

  • It's amazing how some people will risk their life to save someone elses.

  • I just got accepted into medschool! MSF HERE I COME!

  • I know what I want to do, and have for many, many years.

When I finish my Bachelor of science, it's straight to med school.

I also learned French, party because I knew it is an asset if I wish to join this organization (which I do).

They do amazing, albeit heartbreaking work.

  • OMG, Im going to have nightmares from now on because of 0:45. Thats terrible!

  • Now I feel like shit for opting to study dentistry instead of medicine....

  • @xoxoRiverTamxoxo thank you so much!
