The previous great earthquake that devastated New Zealand before the one in Christchurch in 2011 documented by this 1965 film "The Hawke's Bay Disaster", a 15-minute documentary. This quake occurred on Tuesday, February 3, 1931 at 10:47am, measured 7.8 on the Richter scale, was 20 km./12 miles deep and the epicenter was in Hawke's Bay about 20 km./12 miles northwest of Napier 20 km./12 miles north of Hastings on New Zealand's east coast and about 290 km./180 miles northeast of the capital of Wellington on the north island. 256 people were killed and 593 people sustained serious injuries that required hospitalization.
