On December 5, 2010 Hank Walther from Riverside, RI taped this great footage of Boothbay Railway Museum Steam Locomotive 0-4-0 #13 making her rounds at Edaville RR in S. Carver, Mass. It was dusk and #13 is filmed at the main entrance / ticket booth crossing. The train was fully loaded with riders, many braving the mid 30's temps riding the open air car, others in the warm toasty coaches. The steam powered train had 4 coaches, one open air car, caboose and a short flat car bearing the electrical transformer that provided power for lights and heating. A second train " diesel " with heated coaches and caboose were also making the 2 mile loop. The smells of soft coal smoke mixed with steam and hot lube oil filled the air as the train passed Eda Ave crossing. The " Wig Wag " signal was working fantastic. The long trail of coal smoke and steam from the #13's stack as it made the final ascent to the station was highlighted by the clear, calm early evening sky. The still waters added a perfect mirror like immage reflection for those of us watching the passage. Several million lights / illuminated holiday displays cast a heartwarming and cheery glow everywhere. It's nice to be able to view the videos but quite another to go and do Edaville in real time. The lights, the sounds of a Steam Locomotive winding it's way through the property, the smells of coal smoke, the hot lube oil and whistle brought a smile to my face and fond memories of Edaville's past. Hank gave me his permission to post his video on YouTube, it will also be available on my website www.newenglandrailfan.com along with many other great New England based railroading videos.
