  • I watched the video and thought hmmmm?. Then I did some researching up on Steve Reich and found out is an acclaimed composer from America. But I just don't get this, I'm all for music and art as an expression but I just cant find any meaning to this video. Am I missing something?

  • @FerociousSimplicity

Probably it is the same hmmmmmm I feel when I try to watch acclaimed Lady Gaga with 380 millions views on YouTube. Am I missing something?

Absolutely not! Simply ferociously I dont' like Lady Gaga and you don't like Steve Reich

    :-)

  • @FerociousSimplicity The concept of the piece is that two performers clap the same pattern a few times, then one performer does the same rhythm but starts a beat behind (or before, not sure) and keeps moving back a beat through cycles while the other maintains the rhythm while the other performer keeps the same pattern throughout. The dancers i think are just physically demonstrating this through basic physical movements, by having a base set of motions and then phasing them. Cool times man

    the two dancers are:

    1- complicated moves

    2- following a clapping path

3- in sincroncioty with each other

4- translating diagonally in the room

try to do the same and you will understand. Or, more simple: try a simple diagonal walk in your room and you will begin to understand.

  • @FerociousSimplicity The dance is mimicing the variations in the clapping rhythm. It is a set rhythm that is repeated 5 times. It is then displaced by one quaver beat and repeated 5 times and the displaced again and repeated 5 times. It keeps doing this until it has gone full circle and reached the beginning again. It's not about singing a tune, it's about music being more and evoking more than singing to the car radio, at a party /rave or on tv.

  • Palindroming

  • @FerociousSimplicity It is like learning languages. If you see Arabic or Korean text somewhere, do you think it is nonsense, or feel stupid? No, you just realize it is a foreign language. I'd recommend to you try to get the sheets of this from somewhere and try to perform it with your friends. You will understand much more than you expect! It is like dancing with someone, you will know him/her in a minute much more than after hours of talking.

  • @theprof1958 I find tons to appreciate in both Steve Reich and Lady Gaga, as the play count in my iTunes will attest. Maybe it's just because I find the whole concept of "liking" vs. "disliking" to be puerile and naïve, and you don't really listen to music until you drop that line of thinking. But that's just me.

  • love the performance! :) hate the camera work :/

  • its a combination of C walking and Micheal Jackson

  • So glad to see the "clappers" at the end; totally live! Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker (although I'm not a big fan of contemporary dance) is boss. Violin Phase (dance) is great (in my humble opinion).
