A little diversion from the usual.... This one is especially for Lardsah - who, like moi - likes a little FUNK. This tune 'We Got The Funk' by Positive Force was released under the Sugar Hill Gang's label 'Sugar Hill Records' in 1979. It was a massive dancefloor hit in the US when it first came out, but took some time to make waves this side of the Atlantic. But, once it did, around 1981 I remember it being popular, it also became a dance club classic. If you thought you could dance, this was the tune that would test your moves.

This is the original US re-edited version, but I know a version was included on Sugar Hill's 20th Anniversary of club classics album which is available to purchase, and features some of their best loved classic hits, alongside this one.

  • Who gives a shit about all the drama. This track is still fuckin' sick whether it's the original or not!

  • @GarageGuy1977 too true!!

  • Sorry but this isn't the original 12" version. The original version came out near the end of 1979 on Turbo Records. I have my original 12" & it's catalog # Turbo TU-452 & the label is green. On the original version, after she sings "Check this out y'all", they don't go to the chorus, they go straight to the verse, singing "we got the funk that you can dance to". If you compare this to the original, you'll hear every edit that they made.

  • @DatSoulBoss ... no disrespect to you, but this is exactly what the title says it is "Original US re-edit version 1979"... maybe if you watched the video you would see the original record which says exactly what it says in the title.... this edit version came out in 1979, which you can also see on the record. So what you highlight is contradictory to the point you make. Besides, this version is what was distributed to overseas Radio DJs. Can't argue with what it says on the label. Bless

  • @RootsDaughter41926 No disrespect taken. However, as a DJ in New York just across the bridge where Sylvia & Joe had set up shop, I got the record before there was an entity known as Sugarhill. My point was not to make you look bad, but for accuracy. There's too much misinformation already as is on the internet. I just wanted to clarify for the sake of accuracy.

One question...if a song is re-edited, is it"original"? No, because it's an re-edit. I appreciate the post. You have great taste!

  • @DatSoulBoss ... I put "Original" on all my vinyl uploads - it is an original vinyl (of 1979) not taken from a cd or a later repressing/re-issue - which is common on youtube. Many claim a tune is an original when it's not it's been repressed years down the line.

You didn't make me look bad, and I still think the title is accurate :-) it is the original vinyl of the US re-edit version that was distributed to radio DJs overseas. Tunes are often re-mixed for a worldwide distribution audience.

  • @RootsDaughter41926 Say Word!!!!!

  • I think the word 'classic' is often overused, but this track along with tracks like 'stomp', 'funkin' for jamaica' and a whole host of others I could name, just make you want to dance...............

even if you know you can't do it well, but hey, it's all about self-expression. Nice post 1 love.

  • Tune! We Gonna Party!

  • VVVVVV!!!

    Oh wait...

  • And that TURBO LABEL PRESSING WAS A HARD BODY,LOUD, THICK HIFH QUALITY PRESSING. THERE WERE ONLY LIKE 500 of them. I remembef it being the loudest track I had. I would always have to have whatever I mixed with it at the time like VaughnMason Bounce, Curtis Blow Xmas instrumental, Roy Ayers Runnin turned u 2 notches higher just to equal/blend with That High Power Turbo pressing!

  • For accuracy sake Dat Soul boss u r correct it didnr get picked up by Sugarhill for maybe a yr. I had the same copy as u. Of course as with most tracks it was played on little reel. At PG BY LARRY L b4 there was even a test pressing. Great track. Now lets all just get along n ENJOY THE MUSIC!!

  • this has always been my jam... heyyyyyyy
