My Australian Shepherd, Sunny, jumped from the pickup and sent a dozen Canada geese flapping their wings out into the lake.
As Sunny swam back and forth herding the feathered flock, the geese realized they were not a bunch of sheep and turned around to swim toward him. In a wild eyed panic, Sunny churned the water with his front legs and headed toward shore. "Geese are mean," A lady holding the hand of a little boys said. "They can drown a dog." "She's right.," an elderly gentleman agreed. "That dog's goose may be cooked." "Swim faster," I yelled as the geese pecked at Sunny's tail.
Quick as his paws touched the shore, Sunny ran to the pickup and jumped into the passenger seat.
I waved to the cheering spectators when I climbed into the cab as Sunny looked out the window at the squawking geese and barked. I patted him on his furry wet head and he licked my hand.
Sunny was a pup back then and he's older now, grumpier and not nearly as fast, I guess some of what I like about him now is he's a lot like me.

  • Thanks for writing about Sunny. He passed away a few months ago at the age of 15 years, we were privileged to have him for so long. I still call Biscuit our other aussie, Sunny on occasions. When Sunny was a young dog he could jump over a 5 foot fence with room to spare. Youre right about nothing being so sweet as a humbled aussie.

Take care and have a good summer.

  • Nothing more sweet than a humbled aussie...lol.

Ranger was targeted by a mean cranky pitbull, who broke off his leash/muzzle, and started running at Ranger (50ft away). Once Ranger had the pitbull on his back whimpering(lol wow fast), another time, he goes for a racoon by a dumpster. By the time I get over to them (50ft ) it s a furball of cartoon proportions. From the sound neither is winning. Ranger backs off once im there..(had more than enough)

So then I get the look. Thanks.
