Modeling himself on James Michael Curley, the legendary Boston mayor, O'Neil was one of the few remaining links to a time when Irish Catholic men dominated Boston's political landscape. A stalwart conservative, he fought the desegration of Boston public schools, he opposed allowing gays and lesbians to march in South Boston's St. Patrick's Day parade, and he often made disparaging remarks about women.

But he was also a hero to many. A World War II Veteran, O'Neil spent most of his life in public service. He served on the Boston Licensing Board for eight years before joining the City Council in 1971.

  • Dapper for years was maligned by the newspaper (Boston Globe)for calling out David Scondras as the dirt bag he was, but in the end Dapper had his number, Scongras had to resign from the city council for calling 911 over and over while drunk, was caught trolling the internet looking for 15 year old boys and is now a registered sex offender.I only wish Dap was alive to see it "makes me sick".

  • I miss you DAPPER,wish you were on the 2012 ballot for president.

  • @sauroid1 Actually, Dapper had a girlfriend of many decades. He was not a homosexual

  • Dapper personal friend of the Gipper? Don't think so. My Grandfather knew Dapper, he said that after shaking hands with him you'd better count your fingers. Dapper was a hold over from the old "Ward Boss" days when graft and patronage were common place. To think of the patronage jobs Dapper sold in the fire and police departments over the years. He had a fixation about gay people though he himself lived with his elderly mother, then after she died never married. Sort of like J. Edgar Hoover.

  • What we're Dapper's relations with the Bulger Bros like?

  • Joe : "You voted not in "favah" of the human rights vote". I wonder if the years in Cali have erased Joe's Southie accent. I hope not :)

  • ... Dapper you were the Best ! With One pitch He hit A homerun in the 1984 Stickball Tourny in Savin Hill ! ...Don't they just make Ya SICK !

  • Joseph Ryan, from Southie. A friend of mine.

He lives in California now. He's a schoolteacher.

  • nope, nobody knows. Media types like me are the toilet tissue of life. Great pols, on the other hand, are priceles.

  • Does anyone know who that is who is intervieing Dapper?
