The worldwide recession has provided a public call for greater transparency and accountability in financial markets. But the complexity and detail of these makets and companies make identifying wrongdoing difficult - to the point that often only insiders can identify when malfeasance occurs. What issues face international (and national) financial whistleblowers? Why is the only person being sent to jail for the recent UBS scandal - which involved illegal off-shore tax havens - the whistleblower, Brad Birkenfeld? Birkenfeld's disclosures allowed the government to recoup almost $800 million in fines, penalties and back taxes. We speak with experts from the Tax Justice Network and the Government Accountability Project.

  • Simply shocking! Leave it to the U.S. to bail out the Swiss, no questions asked, then jail the American. Makes you wonder.....

  • Another case of the U.S. government getting its priorities ALL WRONG. The Justice Dept. needs to become more assertive and go after the real criminals and get the kingpins damn it.

  • Mr.Barack Obama will not have whistleblowers. The fraud must not be disturbed but enhanced

  • Considering it was Birkenfeld's insider information which exposed off-shore tax havens, the DOJ prosecuting him for the same does not send across the right message.

  • 5 STR & all thums up for Radack!!!!!!!

  • President Obama signed an executive order on Tuesday creating a Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force to investigate and prosecute corporate fraud and deter wrongdoing. But this seems like an empty gesture if this is how people like Birkenfeld are being treated.

  • The current policy certainly doesn't look encouraging for financial whistleblowers. Thank you, GAP, for providing some depth on this important issue.

  • I can't believe that Birkenfeld is being prosecuted in this scandal. This is just another example of improper retaliation against whistleblowers.

  • A night with Radack as Birkenfeld's award?

  • I've got a crush on Radack. Articulate and gorgeous.

  • I am so disappointed with the Obama Administration. I guess what every whistleblower needs to realize is that the only reward you can expect is that you did the right thing. If just a few more people would refuse to cooperate with evil, our world would be so much better.
