  • HOLY SHIT IS THAT A FUCKING SMARTIES SUB?!

  • @SpookyHelder Actually, they were first made in Britain and brought over, then made here by Rowntree, now by Nestle which owns pretty much everything. As for M&Ms, they were in fact Smarties brought over to the US under license and re-named. No one remembers now, as I think it's Mars that owns M&Ms, that they were once one and the same candy!

  • @hensca "They melt in your mouth, not in your hand" wasn't the advertising slogan for smarties, it was the ad slogan for Peanut Treets. Before Peanut Treets emerged there were only chocolate covered peanuts which melted in your hand as soon as you picked them up. The Treets commercial used to say, "Treets-Melt in your mouth-not in your hand" as a white gloved hand opened to reveal a cluster of Peanut Treets. Peanut Treets disapeared when peanut M&M's emerged. The M&M's were of course inferior.

  • I loved this commercial! Brings back good memories :)

  • @blfdproductions No, Smarties existed long before. M&Ms were invented later and were advertised with the claim they "melt in your mouth, not in your hands"... as Smarties notoriously left a rainbow of colours in your hands as you shovelled them into your mouth :-)

  • @LittelMissCuty1 No, every Canadian kid will tell you they ate the red ones first or last... long before the first version of this commercial turned up in the 70s.

  • I don't eat the red ones at all because they're made with cochineal :) ie crushed beetle ovaries.

And they're not knock-off anything. They're from the UK where M&Ms were not available until I believe the 1990s. These were made by Rowntree, now they're made by Nestle. Rowntree was the best!

  • @SkyStealer17 Nope, they're purely Canadian. And funny you mentioned the rockets thing, because when I was visiting the States I heard the same story!

  • Are they here, in the states? Do they have a different name? One of my Canadian friends is telling me to try them. Apparently what I thought she was talking about are really "rockets" haha

  • ok does the guy who invented smarties or does their commercials like have an undeniable love for the red ones and just can't stand to eat them!?!?
