In December 2007 and 2009, I traveled with a group of educators to Guatemala for humanitarian projects. The trips consisted of building a schoolhouse and efficiency stoves for area villages; specifically san filipe and San Andres soniquia. Although the official projects were construction efforts, the main goal of both trips was to experience a full immersion into a culture other than our own. It was a life changing experience for me.
