{This video is an excerpt of Suzanna Winton's video "Step by Step Watercolor Portraits" available for purchase at Cheap Joe's Art Stuff.}

A lot of times you'll see a very strong color around the hairline. This time I'm going to mix Scarlet Lake and Opera together and put that on the hairline.

I will soften this color on this side. I also see that strong color in the areas behind her cheeks where her hair hangs down. Just trying to intensity my colors so that I can lay in my features next.

I also see this side of the nose is darker than on the closer side - I need to get that in there so that I can separate her nose from her cheek area. This is very important and helps it look more three dimensional.

There's a little background color here right next to her head so I'm going to add the Windsor Yellow and the Manganese Blue there just to get that in.

It's very important to establish your lights and your darks. Which side of the nose is darker? Is it darker on the nose side? Or is it darker on the cheek side of her face? In this case it's darker on the cheek side of her face.

If you can get your darks in and know where your edges are light or dark, you'll get a stronger and nicer painting.

  • Excerpts are far too short. Or in the wrong stage for an excerpt. At least show us midway in the painting stage, for the same amount of time.

    I don't see the benefit these clips serve, when the painting is just starting out.

  • "Or in the wrong stage for an excerpt. At least show us midway in the painting stage, for the same amount of time."

    Did I say anything about the whole session?

    All I'm saying is that if I were to buy the DVD, how is this an appropriate preview? I can't even tell if she's a good artist, or one that I would be interested in

  • It's a clip from a DVD, it would be stupid to show the whole session, since they want you to buy it.
