Pyrotechnic shows attract an audience eager to see how close they can come to getting burned without the pain and suffering attached to the flames' mysterious and unpredictable behavior. Pyros love the unbridled power of nature's most intimidating element and like moths to a flame, they can't resist the urge to get close to it. We suffered a pyro-like tendency when we first came upon Austin O'Krinsky's lifted and flamed '08 Chevy 2500HD. Using his first big truck project as a springboard to promote his family's business, Extreme Off-Road, in Katy, Texas, Austin got a little carried away and the end result is blazing a path across the show scene in the Lone Star State.
Starting with a powerful truck straight from the dealer lot, Austin and his team at Extreme Off-Road quickly got to work making the truck much, much bigger. Bolted to the Chevy, a 3rd Coast Suspension 19-inch lift kit allows plenty of clearance for the 22x10.5-inch BMF Novakane wheels wrapped in 40-inch Toyo M/T tires. While they were at it, the frame was smoothed and painted gloss black, chrome-plated Fox Racing Shox were added at each corner, and Atlas leaf springs were bolted onto the rear axle. A big brake kit from SSBC brings the 3/4-ton beast to a halt and detailing such as powdercoated suspension pieces and painted Mag-Hytec diff cover and axle add to the undercarriage's combustible appearance.
A big truck with a nice chassis is cool, but that won't turn any heads in a state flooded with big rides. Taking the 2500HD to the custom furnace, S&T Autobody, also in Katy, smoothed and painted the front bumper, mirrors, door handles, and side tube steps for a streamlined appearance. The guys then busted out the airbrush gun and forever set the truck ablaze with a set of real-fire flames. Add to that the black Recon Halo headlights, Recon LED taillights, and solid-billet BMF mesh grille, and this Chevy truck was snapping necks every time the rubber hit the pavement. Not wanting just a shiny outside with no custom interior accoutrements, Extreme Off-Road opened the doors and got to work.
Inside the crew cab, the boring factory black leather was removed and upgraded with Katzkin real leather seat covers featuring red suede inserts and contrasting red stitching. Each pillar and the headliner were wrapped in black suede and several plastic trim pieces were smoothed and painted red to match. This Chevy HD sounds as good as it looks thanks to a Kenwood head unit controlling JL Audio components in each door and two 13.5-inch JL Audio subs under the back seat. Powering all of the high-end speakers are three JL Audio HD-series amplifiers and all the audio juice flows through Stinger cables.
Seat time is reserved for Austin only, however, as the Duramax diesel has received a bevy of performance enhancements. Turning up the diesel's wick is as easy as dialing in the Quadzilla tuner and adding power on the fly. The Chevy HD now sports a BD Diesel turbo upgrade, aFe air intake, and MBRP DPF-delete 4-inch exhaust system. Spinning the tires is a set of 4.88 gears from G2 Axle, which are protected by a Mag-Hytec diff cover. To accommodate the massive lift, Houston Drivetrain lengthened the driveshaft and eliminated any vibrations.
