Matt Stanford, a life-long member of the Zoo, knew he wanted to do his Eagle Scout project for the good of our animals. This summer, with help from his Boy Scout troop, he constructed 12 enrichment devices for our apes. Enrichment is anything that helps a Zoo animal to engage with and explore his surroundings. Matt's devices require the apes to use tools (sticks) to "fish" for their food. Making the apes "work" for their food keeps them occupied and simulates the work that their wild-living counterparts do to acquire and process foods. Matt and his mother Terri also carried out an enrichment donation drive at a local preschool to collect other enrichment items for the Zoo's primates. They brought in all sorts of items including kiddie pools, toys, brushes, and sprinklers. Thank you, Matt and Troop #282 for all of your hard work!
