KIEV, January 13 (RIA Novosti) - Ukraine's biggest opposition faction started on Tuesday procedures to impeach President Viktor Yushchenko, and also called for the dismissal of Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko's government.

"We demand the immediate resignation of the government and the start of procedures to impeach the president," Viktor Yanukovych, the leader of the Party of Regions, said, addressing an extraordinary session of parliament devoted to the current gas dispute between Russia and Ukraine. He was supported by the Ukrainian Communist Party.

Yushchenko, whose popularity has slumped to 2.4% according to the results of a poll published on Monday, did not attend the Supreme Rada session. Tymoshenko was, however, present.

Russia cut off shipments of natural gas to Ukraine after talks on outstanding debt and a gas price for 2009 broke down on New Year's Eve. The gas conflict led to a complete breakdown in Russian gas supplies to Europe via Ukraine, which transits around 80% of Russia's gas exports to EU countries.

Yanukovych said that because of the "irresponsible" position of the government, Ukraine was facing a threat to its national security, and was losing its reputation and status as a transit country. He also said the ruling 'orange' coalition had destroyed agreements with Russia that had been built up through years of hard work.

"The authorities have left Ukraine not only without gas, but without prospects as well," Yushchenko's former presidential rival said.

Yanukovych also demanded that the government account for its actions in front of parliament, and that an investigation committee be formed to examine the gas dispute.
Right now Yushchenko is deeply unpopular at home. His support level is even lower than that of George Bush among Americans - about 4 per cent. Plus, the majority of Ukraines people are against a possible NATO bid.

We can give gas, but have no order to do so Ukraines Naftogaz
Gazprom says Ukraine's Naftogaz confirms that it is technically possible to transit Russian gas to Europe via Ukraine, but that there has been no political decision from Kiev to start the process.
Chronology of Russia-Ukraine gas war

The current gas cuts are the culmination of a long gas war between Russia and Ukraine, RT looks back at its latest chapter, starting back in October 2007 and the ongoing crisis, the effect of which is now being felt all around Europe.

Gas war chronologyGazprom says Ukraine's Naftogaz confirms that it is technically possible to transit Russian gas to Europe via Ukraine, so its purely politics thats hampering the process.

There has been no political decision taken to resume gas deliveries. Although at dispatcher-level we've received information that there is a possibility of accepting gas into the system, in a phone conversation the head of Naftogaz Oleg Dubina has said that the company will not do it, said Gazproms spokesperson Sergey Kupriyanov.

Earlier During telephone talks with Ukraines President Viktor Yushchenko, Russian leader Dmitry Medvedev has called on him to immediately resume gas supplies to European consumers.

Medvedev has proposed Ukraine to supply them with process gas (maintenance gas needed to keep product flowing through the pipes) on behalf of the International consortium of European countries to start the transit of fuel to Europe via Ukraine.

  • hey let that fucking gas through we're freezing out here!

  • @shadowofmy

Ukraine has an agreement with Russia until 2012 at the price of 80 dollars

Russia has made changes in blackmail...

Or pay or cancel the delivery

We do not like Russia and the Russians

They live at the expense of money in Ukraine

  • I have nothing against negotiation on new contract. But one thing is negotiation and other is blackmailing! Like "you have to except our terms or we "shot down all your business"! Even if people all around the Europe will freeze! And we won't benefit from that anyhow!...." To me it's very clear! If you not capable to see this, I have nothing to ad. And really don't want to spend my time other explanation of this!

  • shadowy..

The contract beteeen Gazprom and the European Union sets the gas price at oil prices 9 month earlier.

If you check in your USA the cost of gas over the last 9 month its the following:

    9 month ago - $145.- per barrel

    Today - $35.-

So, what is the value of todays gas price in Europe = the one EU will pay 9 month from now?

    1/3 of $500.- = $165.-

    Give me your view.

Ukraine has no contract with Gazprom - so they are discussing todays gas values - pretty simple?

  • "Ukraine does NOT benefit from blocking Russian Gas supplies..." Really??? Russia ask 450$, Ukraine want it for 250$ or even less... otherwise it block gas TRANSIT !!! to Europe!
