It's a European hamster (Cricetus cricetus). The behavior isn't unusual. Hamsters are notoriously snippy animals.

I have a hamster, Lulu and she didnt like me much, I never pick her up for the fear of being biten. I try to pet her but she bites me, not hard enough to make me bleed but still. Then that one day when I have to refill her food bowl she bit my thumb! It HURT!!! And yes it did bleed a little. Now I think of her as demonic cause her eyes have always been red and she drew blood. (Evil hamster...)

I think it is a wild hamster considered to be the most aggressive of all hamsters and of course the biggest. Hamster: hey you get of my land!
