Loose and/or excessive alar fold tissue is a cause of poor performance in racehorses as it cuts off part of the airway. Because it increases airway pressure, we also see it in horses with exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhage. It is a relatively uncommon condition.
clinically it presents as a very loud expiratory noise, caused by the loose fold vibrating.

  • What do you mean by "poor performance in racehorses"?

  • Interesting, in all my years with hunter jumpers and my trainer having ex-racehorses, I'd never heard of this 'alar fold' condition. I like your surgery videos, very informative and nice to see the surgeries up close.
