During Front Crawl, your legs can either assist in forward propulsion at the cost of high energy consumption or alternatively kick steadily to ensure the legs stay lifted and streamline with an energy efficient contribution to the stroke.

  • Thank you for watching and commenting. If you can find yourself a great instructor they should be able to identify how your stroke can develop in order for it to not rely so much on the legs & more so on the upper body (as this is where the majority of propulsion should come from with the front crawl stroke). In the mean time (and without seeing you swim) you may want to try swimming arms only with a pull buoy to develop upper body propulsion whilst easing off with the leg kick?Just a thought..

  • Sounds to me like you're doing the correct thing with the legs (although difficult to be sure without seeing you swim!). It is normal for there to be a slight pause and sometimes gentle cross over with the legs as the body rotates for you to breath. The legs work as a balance for the stroke when this happens. Continual kicking tends to only be performed when sprinting and using a six beat kick. Thank you for watching and sending feedback. I hope this all helps you. Regards, Mark

  • I find the legs the hardest part to control while swimming. I'll keep the stuff in mind that you told next time i go out for a swim, thanks a lot mark!

  • @Theshofumiah1 2 beat kick. Phelps 2 beat kick utube, or total Immersion is 2 beat. Good luck

  • @Theshofumiah1 Try to do some kicking exercises with a kickboard, and make sure your hips and legs aren't sinking down when you swim. Keeping your body in line is important.

  • I feel as tho I have to kick with my feet constantly otherwise I drown. hence, my legs and me get breathless and tired quickly within only 50 metres(2laps)

    this is so annoying to master, these video makes it look so easy. any advice anyone plaese :(

  • one thing i have difficulty with is maintaining any sort of fluidity with my leg action when i am taking a breath. i aim to 'turn with the hips' when drawing breath, but this inevitably puts my body at an angle, affecting my kicking action. any tips for maintaining a strong action while your body is turned/while drawing breath? thanks!
