Condoleezza Rice, former U.S. Secretary of State interviewed by Fareed Zakaria for CNN

The Professor & The President. Rice on Obama.
What grade should Obama get? Condi won't chirp. Very good national security team. US interests stable, pursing interests and values.
Rice: "a lot of continuity" in Bush, Obama policies
Rice: Foreign policy takes a long time to change
View from inside the Oval Office different.

Libya. Grateful we disarmed Gaddafi of his WMD.
Rice: "I am very grateful" Bush administration disarmed Gadafi
Rice: "I was kind of 50/50" on Libyan intervention.
Questions - end game? Who are the rebels? Good that British and French can lead. US can't hand off to NATO. 50/50 decision to intervene. Could argue in the middle of the Arab spring to have Gaddafi mow down his people and stop demonstrations might be an argument.

Rice: I agree with President Obama on "don't ask, don't tell".
Bob Gates handled this well.

Afghanistan surge.
Things weren't going so badly in '05-'06
Pakistan safe haven for Taliban was 2008 problem that needed review & increase in troops & broader counter-insurgency. Not take forever. Prevent existential threat to Afghanistan from Taliban and get more decent government. Then draw-down.

Rice on Rumsfeld's criticisms of her
RUMSFELD V. RICE
Rice: Rumsfeld "doesn't know what he is talking about"
Rumsfeld said Rice was a bad national security advisor. Rumseld grumpy and doesn't know what he is talking about. Not there in one on one meetings with President Bush in the Oval Office after situation room meetings.

  • Well if Rumsfeld is Grumpy, Bush must be Doc and Condi must be Snow White.

"Magic mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?"

"On the third planet, with five oceans, in the land of the free and the home of the brave dwells Condoleezza Rice, fairest one of all."
