under rendering menu ---> advanced lighting ----> Exposure control
at environment tap you'll find Logarithmic Exposure Control Parameters, check the box beside Exterior Daylight.
I think this may help you with the over bright objects problem

I guess it's supposed to be animated for a scene in the southern hemisphere (Australia), cause the sun runs counterclockwise.

You have to go to exposure control and put it on an exposure control setting for daylight systems.

my scene always gets overlit with the daylight system, no matter what version of max I use (that includes max 2008)
