News programs also had to wait for film to be flown in & processed for international coverage before satellite, a process that could take days.
And in the days before cassettes, CDs & digital audio recording, we would often just hold a mike up to the mono speaker of our TV set or radio to get a sound recording at home on our primitive reel-to-reel tape recorders. But you know, a lot of those things came out really well & would hold up today transferred to a digital format.

There was a bit more to it than that, a peripheral device, etc., but that was about it. Jackie Gleason's early episodes of "The Honeymooners" called it the "Electronicam System" or some such, but those were kinescopes too.
-
Since all early TV shows were done live East of the Mississippi, to re-broadcast them for the West coast before the trans-national coaxial cable (and later satellite) relay system was built, reels of films shot in just the manner you did with your digital camera were shot on film cameras and flown West.
-
Of course Desi Arnaz devised a system for "I Love Lucy" & other Desilu shows, of filming shows with three cameras running, which allowed for continuous editing. Then those reels were made available to the network and affiliates nationwide, but for live programs like news, variety & game shows, kinescoping was it before videotape came into fashion in the late 1950's.
-
Well, "spookylorre," digital camera pointed at TV screen is essentially how reruns of live TV shows were preserved before videotape was invented--a process called "kinescoping."

I loved that show!
Pianist? That was really her playing? I thought I saw a beat in there where she raised her hand off the keys but the song just kept going.

Yes, that's her playing. She also played Chopin when she guest starred on "Person to Person." Problem's the synch. Somehow some YOUTUBE vids lose synch during upload. Or something. Some technical glitch. I might try a fresh upload using AVI or some other format.

Good News - Julie's website says that negotiations are underway to bring "My Living Doll" to DVD. Just a question of high bidder and whether it would be a 1 DVD or 2 DVD or complete season package. Quality purrfect. This was shot digital camera pointed at TV screen (that does not compute with "professional," I know...)
