The 11th video in the Road to Italy series. Here we are talking about different kinds of vibrato for different kinds of moods for different kinds of musical pieces! I do a few examples of the kinds of vibrato I like and or dislike for certain situations. We explore the music of Ida Gotkovsky (Variations Pathetiques), Jules Demersseman (Faintaisie on an original theme) and Jean Michel-Damase (Vacances). I still have a lot to work out, but I'm slowly piecing together the vibrato I want!

  • Beautiful. A perfect example of making an instrument 'sing'.

  • Hi, Joe...

Just thought I'd drop in to wish you luck in Italy.

  • Very beautiful sounds Joe! Yes, vibrato can be dangerous. I see a whole lot of people try to use vibrato and end up making it sound like "Hey, I'm gonna use vibrato here!" It should be natural and beautiful, like the way you play it. Also, do you vibrato with your mouth or your diaphragm?
