Eduoard Manet ws born in Paris in 1832 and became a pivotal figure in the artistic transition from realism to impressionism. His family was well off and he did some traveling as a youth, sailing on a training vessel to Rio de Janeiro. He also visited Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands, studying the art of the masters. He opened his own studio in 1856 using simplified details and quiet transitional tones. He became friends with Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, and Camille Pissaro, as well as Emile Zola, who supported his painting publicly in his writings. He died in 1883 of untreated syphilis and rheumatism, eleven days after his left foot was amputated due to gangrene. He was 51 years old. For music we have "Prelude No. 3 in A Minor," by Hector Villa Lobos.
