Recorded circa 1938, when Ida Presti was a teenager, this spanish "Serenata Espagnola" by Catalan composer Joaquim Malats (1872-1912) arr. by Francisco Tarrega(1852-1909).

  • Her interpretation of this piece, in my opinion is at least equal or better than Segovia's. Li Jie's version is good but no where near this level.

  • She breathes and exhales music!

  • Why are people comparing her to Li Jie... no offense, but the comparison should be between Presti and Bream. I do like this interpretation, but ultimately prefer Bream's.

  • The better interpretation...once again =)

  • @bacsidoan What an honor for talented Li Jie to even be mentioned in the same sentence as Ida Presti is!

  • meravigliosa.

    Un fenomeno del nostro passato

  • My favorite interpretation of this piece. Agile, spanish, full of life. In Switzerland I would call it "Käferfest". I don't know the antology in English, something like "bug-party" may be :)

  • dinkipooxa - I have to confess a bias here! To me, the soul of Spain is reflected in the guitar, not the piano. And yes, there's something especially poetic in the way Segovia plays Spanish pieces that transcends any other.

With Presti, I too am hearing loads of staccato, balanced by good voice separation, full rubato, phrasing and dynamics that make sense, plenty of tension and release, tasteful portamento, inimitable vibrato, clear tone, with a genuine flamenco feel to her strums and runs.

  • dinkipooxa - All of these women are fine performers, but do they really bring anything new to the table?

Presti and Goni are one of a kind and their playing is full of delight. By comparison, they just put so much thought into their playing. Goni's "John Duarte - Suite Piemontese" clip says it all.

  • dinkipooxa - I think you're right. Anna's playing here is simply outstanding, and this composition of Brouwer's suits her generally romantic playing style to a tee. Her musical maturity, as with many Russians, is gobsmacking.

But hearing Presti play (especially her Spanish repertoire) reveals the full array of expressive devices she has at her disposal. This results in much more colour, tension, contrast and authenticity in her playing of these particular pieces.

  • Thank you Dinki
