The late Bernie Mac was an American actor and comedian who was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago. He gained his popularity as a stand-up comedian, and he joined other well-known comedians as "The Original Kings of Comedy."
His most notable role was as Frank Catton in Ocean's Eleven and its two sequels. He was also the star of "The Bernie Mac Show" and won to Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in Comedy Series. He was also in Charlie's Angels, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, Bad Santa, Guess Who?, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner and Transformers. He was also the winner of the Peabody Aware for excellence in broadcasting and he was #47 in TV Guide's list of the "50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time."
Mac suffered from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the body's organs, but had said the condition went into remission in 2005. Then on July 24th, 2008 Bernie Mac was hospitalized with an infections, that later turned out to be pneumonia. On August 9th, his publicist announced that Mac had died from complications of pneumonia unrelated to sarcoidosis.
The 2008 Bud Billiken Parade in Chicago, on the day he died, was dedicated to his memory.
