The song was written by frontman Eddie Vedder. The song was recorded during the sessions for the Neil Young/Pearl Jam collaboration Mirror Ball. It features Pearl Jam members Eddie Vedder, Jeff Ament, and Jack Irons. Neil Young plays pump organ on the track.

The song was re-recorded by Eddie Vedder for the soundtrack to the 1995 film Dead Man Walking. For this version Vedder collaborated with Pakistani musician Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. An extended take of this version was released on the score version of the soundtrack-

and I wished for so long...
I cannot stay
All the precious moments...
Cannot stay
It's not like wings have fallen...
I cannot say
Without you something is missing...
I cannot say

Holding hands of daughters and sons
In their phase they're falling down
Down, down, down

I have wished for so long...
How I wish for you again

Will I walk the long road?
I cannot stay
There's no need to say goodbye

Oh, the friends and family...
All the memories going round
Round, round round...

I have wished for so long...
How I wished for you today

And the wind keeps rollin'
And the sky keeps turning grey
And the sun is set
The sun will rise another day

I have wished for so long...
How I wish for you today

I have wished for so long...
How I wish for you today
Will I walk the long road?
We all walk the long road

  • a world without borders.still eludes us.

  • the actual recorded song is so much better, i love the mix of the different singing/chanting and the drums just give it such a relaxing sound

  • its the same thing Indian, Pakistan ,Bangladesh .You think they care here in the west?

  • nusrat's great, got to know him through jeff buckley and love the swirl it gives to this song, brilliant

  • this is so beautiful ...

  • This is strictly Indian and Pakistani music.

  • two legends in one song absolutely beautiful

  • And Rahat Fateh Ali is Nusrat's nephew (the famous qawali singer from Pakistan) who's gifted with such magnificent voice. Anyway...Eddie rocks any given day \nn/

Rahat's done a great job too as usual :)
