Wounded Heart: Pine Ridge and the Sioux

American Indians and government officials discuss poverty, racism, domestic violence, child abuse, inadequate health care, and drug and alcohol problems that besiege the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in SW South Dakota. Pine Ridge is home to the Lakota Tribe of the Sioux. The Sioux produced some of the greatest North American Indian leaders the world has known including Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, Red Cloud and Russell Means.

@nightrider836 Obama is not going to give Native people any respect.If I was president of the United States of America I would give the Native people respect and some of their land back and tear up all existing treaty's.I would take billions of tax payers dollars and invest in Native American immersion schools.Instead of giving away billion's to foreigners.Like Israel and so forth.I would get rid of Native American Day and give them dignity that they deserve.Like all human beings.

The native Americans fought each other to get better hunting grounds just like the clans in Scotland but there was never any massacre. Battles were fought with honour.

@widschasche4 The U.S. Government doesn't keep promises to general citizens. It certainly won't keep the ones made to Native Americans.

@sksman71 I wouldn't tear up the treaties. I would keep those things on permanent display in a U.S. History museum to show the horrors of what we have done to these people and above all we should honor those treaties. How can we claim to be an honorable people when we know what our forefathers have done to these people and yet as my generation grow up we still let this happen?

White men could have learned so much from the Native Americans, and they wasted that opportunity. Indians knew how to use natural resources to heal ailments, and took from the land what they needed. I'm not Indian, but they will always have my respect and admiration.

The great battles against invasion ended in the heart of North America. I think the proof of when our rebuilding is complete will be there too.

There is so much historical grief that each one of us left has to face before we can start. It is compounded by the current tribulations that touch all of our families. There are none of us that can say that we don't have alcoholism, diabetes, or poverty in our family.
