You don´t have to rest the horn on your lap. I´ve never learned that, but I guess there´s different ways playing it.

I play french horn. I'm 14 and i started my 8th grade year. So i've only been playing for a year, but i learned soo much. I understand what ur talking about with the note placement. I'm surprised that you didnt mention that french horn usually is keyed in F and Bb. and the use of the thumb key.
