i cant save as .pat ? it sais : You can use this dialog to save to the GIMP XCF format. Use File→Export to export to other file formats.

If you just upgraded to GIMP 2.8, then saving as an XCF and exporting to other file types were separated into 2 distinct options, so just do what the message told you: go to File > Export instead of File > Save.

You could try using "Colorize" or "Colorify" in the Colors menu, or you could watch what I did to make the background in my Glossy Metal 3D Text tutorial.

When ever I make the square the damn thing just disappears as soon as I select the gradient tool!
