Video of a stroll around one of Derby's best parks, Markeaton Park near Mackworth
Markeaton Hall and 20 acres of the estate was bequeathed to the people of Derby by Emily Mundy at her death on August 6th 1929 under the condition that the hall would be used as a museum or gallery for the collection of fine paintings.
The hall was allowed to fall into disrepair and was demolished in 1964 (the hall makes a brief appearence in this video).
Later Dr. Gilchrist Clarke Maxwell sold more land to the council and the lake was enlarged as a works programme during the 1930s depression.
Markeaton Park is now one of Derby's largest parks bosting a small light raiolway, an 18 hole golf course, boating, fishing, a skate-board park and children's playground and boating lake, tennis courts and a pitch an putt green.

  • This brings back old memories of the 60s. There used to be a paddling pool there but I think that it was closed. Thank you.

  • Awesome. I haven't been here since i was a kid.
