I was inspired by the movie of the same name and wanted to get to know that poem myself. I did and needless to say I was impressed by the spirit of it. I understand how it was able to inspire Nelson Mandela in his 27 years in prison as a political prisoner.
So I put together images of barrenness and richness in order to capture range of this piece of literature. I chose nature images because it seems to me that everything we need to know and see about ourselves has been written there in natrure, if we choose to look.
I chose my composition "Face in the Water" because it seems to have the same mixture of emptiness and fullness and it seemed to capture the mood that I wanted to convey behind those powerful words.
Finally, in an age of victimization, of valuing safety over freedom the main theme, the punchline if you will "I am the captain of my soul" should resonate with everyone. It is after all is said and done, up to you what happens. to you and to the world.

It inspired me too.. Great poem!
And what to say about Nelson Mandela.....: What would the world do or where would it go without his graceful and so deep, good, loving words... I love his work, vision and spirit, he's really a Christ in my opinion. Love for the people; everyone of them!
Love for life! Love to live!
My love to Nelson Mandela and his spirit 4-ever....
