[I first uploaded this video last night in HD, but that cut off too much of the top and bottom of my original footage. So I deleted it and uploaded in the next highest clarity which leaves the original size. Please view it in 480p rather than 360p and then reduce the size of the image to the smaller size.... Then you'll have the best viewing possible! Enjoy... I hope! Now read below my initial comments.]

Lori and I had taken the night flight from Jakarta to Sentani, arriving on a beautiful blue-sky Sunday. We made it to the local expat church service after which John and Joy (featured in another video) took us out to eat. Then they dropped us off at the bus stop to make our way to Jayapura. The bus lingered in Abepura a while, and I'll upload a clip from there later.

This is the final leg of the bus ride (about 30 kilometers) into Jayapura on this bright - and hot - March Sunday afternoon at about 3:30 in 2005. After winding down the hill, we are dropped off at the central bus pick-up point located right on the bay! Notice the banner at one of the main downtown intersections. It reads, DIRGAHAYU 95 TAHUN... KOTA JAYAPURA, meaning "Long live Jayapura, 95 years old." Also notice that everything is closed down at this time of day. Jayapura follows the Dutch tradition of closing up shop at noon and then opening at about 5:00 pm when things start to cool down a bit. Love it....!

Again, beautiful scenes of the peninsula where Base G (named due to fact GI's were based there in WWII)- great beaches & snorkeling are located on the far side and where we see the ship Sentosa and another touring ship (German or Dutch?) in the harbor. When I ask a guy where that ship is from, he does the typical response of giving some answer even though he doesn't know: he pauses and then says "Jawa" (Java) & then "Jakarta."

We were going to stay with Aunt Edai, veteran missionary who came out to Papua in 1961. While waiting for her, we meet some of the others at the bus stop. The first guy I meet is Robert who seems to just be hanging out and enjoys being in the video. In the conversation with him I'm asking if he has a phone number, but it turns out he doesn't have a hand-phone. Lori and I also meet Henry and Sam. Henry is a student and fluent in English. He is going to Jakarta the next week to participate in some kind of exchange of ideas.

I love this video because it brings back fond memories of trips to Base G and Invasion Beach both with family and on long-weekend breaks from school. I remember family holidays... early memories when the Dutch were still there and it was called Hollandia; then later after it became Jayapura under Indonesia. (after first being called Sukarnopura) And I miss being around Papuans.... so this can be just a fix to ease that desire! Enjoy.

And Lori.... thanks for ikuting and making this an extra fun trip! .... And I forgot to mention that Lori meets a guy named Robi at the end, and the long red fruit at his feet is known in English as Red Fruit, but in Indonesian as Buah Merah (Red Fruit). It is highly valued in all of Indonesia because of its health properties. - Dan

  • where'd you learn to speak indonesian so well

  • Great video, thx for posting Dan!. What a gorgeous location this is! Despite I've never been to Jayapura or elsewhere in Papua, the landscape, nature and architecture look typical and easily recognizable countryside Indonesia, equally fabulous yet inspire pleasant nostalgia and plenty of best remembrances of this irresistibly beautiful country. The majority of native faces perhaps look somewhat different from the people we usually expect to meet in Java/Sumatra but also easygoing & friendly.

  • Well, for people outside of Java, Jakarta and Java are same different. Hahaha.
