A reporter's story of living with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)--Philadelphia Phillies Morning Call writer Mandy Housenick was diagnosed with HCM at age 15, bringing to a halt her participation in four competitive sports in high school. Today, she channels her energy into her job, covering the triumphs and travails of the Phillies. Watch her story, and hear her speak on Oct. 27 at Lehigh Valley Hospital--Cedar Crest.

HCM is a genetic disease in which the heart's muscle is abnormally thick. It affects one in 500 people, a small number of whom are at risk for sudden death, especially younger people who engage in competitive sports.
