Due to severe drought conditions made worse by forest fires in the summer of 2007, the native black bear population around Lake Tahoe (California and Nevada, USA) suffered an extreme shortage of its native food supply. These dire circumstances led to record numbers of bears entering unattended homes and cabins that were well stocked with food. The BEAR League, a locally well-known and proactive wildlife advocacy NGO launched a controlled and carefully orchestrated diversionary/supplemental feeding program in order to assist the bears and reduce damage to people's homes. While the program was illegal, it was highly successful in this particular emergency situation.
This year, the natural food supply for Black Bears has failed in many parts of North America; I've been reading of more and more human/bear encounters because of it. Thanks for posting this very interesting and timely video.
