England is in civil war as the Royalists battle Oliver Cromwell's Roundheads for control. This conflict distracts people from rational thought and allows unscrupulous men to gain power by exploiting village superstitions. One of these men is Matthew Hopkins (Vincent Price), who tours the land offering his services as a persecutor of witches. Aided by his sadistic accomplice John Stearne (Robert Russell), he travels from town to town and wrenches confessions from "witches" in order to line his pockets.

historical horror at its best and Vinnie Quite unobtrusive. Reeves suicided himself afterwards as far as I know.

You could also say Witchfinder General isn't a horror film, but I couldn't give a stuff! Both Tenebrae and Witchfinder make my HORROR top 10, and that's that.

Tenebrae isn't a horror film, it's giallo which is a cross genre of soft porn, slasher, mystery and thriller.

I've got the Blu-ray of Witchfinder General, looks superb! It would definitely find a place in my top 10 horror flicks, along with stuff like: The Thing (1982), City of the Living Dead, Tenebrae, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), Zombie Flesh Eaters, etc.

Aack! Price is right... (no pun intended) about man's inhumanity to man/woman.

And even now, everywhere you go, it's still Custodes and Materia...

Each to their own and all that but I think Michael Reeves original cut (with all the violence intact and none of the topless shots included for the continental version) is 10x better than the U.S. Conqueror Worm version.

American version released by AIP. Both versions are good....Ian Ogilvy's commentary is was a pal of the director and not Price, so it reflects his bias.
