It is a new idol group created by Yasushi Akimoto.
The group's concept is "Idols you can meet"

The 73 members (as of November 26, 2010) chosen by audition
perform daily at their exclusive AKB48 Theater in Tokyo's Akihabara district.

The group's 16th single "Ponytail to Shushu" and their 17th single "Heavy rotation" both recorded initial sales of over 500,000 copies.
This consecutive record is unprecedented by any Japanese female artist.

Their 18th single "Beginner", which hit store shelves on October 27, 2010, recorded sales of over 1 million copies!!

These achievements have earned them an appearance on the 61st NHK Red and White Year-end Song Festival!
This appearance will be their third on the show, making AKB48 a national idol group in both deed as well as in name.

From the most energetic city Akihabara, AKB48 generates buzz in Japan, and now ready to take on the world!!

オーディションによって選ばれた総勢73人(2010年11月26日現在)のメンバー­が、東京の秋葉原にある専用劇場「AKB48劇場」で毎日ステージを行っている。

16thシングル『ポニーテールとシュシュ』17thシングル『ヘビーローテーション­』と2作連続で、初動売上50万枚超えを記録。
これは日本女性アーティストとして史上初の快挙。

そして2010年10月27日に発売された18thシングル『Beginner』が総­売上枚数100万枚をついに突破!!

これらの功績が認められ、大晦日の第61回NHK紅白歌合戦に出演が決定!!
今回で通算3回目の出演となり、名実ともに国民的アイドルとなった。

いま、最もエネルギーのあふれる街、秋葉原からAKB48が日本へ、そして世界へ旋風­を巻き起こす!!
