I was listening to this beautiful piece by Bill Evans and randomly decided to record it. Let me know what you think. (Jacob Hiser on piano.)

  • I didn't care for your interpretation. I like the way Liz Story plays it. Your improvisation didn't have a purpose. When I listen to Liz play it (perfectly), it tells a story. Has a beginning, middle, and end. The song tells a story.

  • @theacme1000 Yeah, I know. That's something I'm trying to work on; having a purpose or direction when I improvise. Thanks for the comment, though.

I listened to Liz Story's version...it sounds almost exactly the way Bill Evans played it, which I think misses the point. It's supposed to be different every time you play it. The only thing that's supposed to be constant is the left hand ostinato.

  • Is this not also Flamenco Sketches (Miles Davis)? At least very similar? I know Bill wrote it (and wasn't given credit). This is definitely it, just doesn't have the various modal changes the Davis tune does.

  • @warsd4 Yeah, it's pretty much the same thing, except without any sort of written melody and the modal changes for Flamenco Sketches. Good observation.

  • Amazing.

  • lovely simply lovely

  • @warsd4 This is a composition of Bill Evans AND Miles Davis, more you can find if you search for flamenco sketches from miles davis!

  • @jhiser90 Yes. She does play it exactly as Bill Evans played it but I think she does a better job (I am biased because I love Liz Story's music and playing). She makes it sound like it is a fully developed piece but still sounds un-planned. If you've ever seen her live, it looks like every note she plays is unplanned and yet comes out perfect.

I should have said earilier I like your improves, I just didn't think they were put together in a meaninful way (which I guess you agree).

  • Very well played!*****
