I agree , and plenty of others do too. The fish has given you some pleasure in catching it. The very least you could do is give a wild creature a degree of respect and land and handle it with great care. Who knows , if it goes back happy , and without stress or scale damage , it might allow another angler the pleasure of catching it again. Great fish by the way , i'm going for tench tomorrow.
